Lost Colony

* * *

New Virginia, named for the birthplace of the chief exploitation officer of the TRAPPIST-2 Colony Foundation, was the first site chosen once the landers were modified to remove control by the AIs and return it to the People. While it was the first site chosen, it was actually the second landing. A delay in shifting cryostasis chambers into the lander meant that Lander Three was released for descent to the Beta site (Antonia) twenty-four hours before Lander Two began its own descent to the Alpha site. Site Alpha had more natural resources, while Site Beta had more cultivatable land and greater agricultural potential. It would also require a larger population. As a result, Lander Four was dispatched to Site Beta, renamed Antonia, where the People could be productively engaged in working in harmony with the land instead of robbing it of resources.

These precautions seemed prescient when communications were lost with New Virginia and it was eventually discovered that the entire population had vanished. One thousand colonists from Antonia chose to reestablish the failed colony, and they, too, succumbed: this time to disease. Many theories were put forth regarding the deaths and disappearances. The most respected thesis is that artificially imposing a capitalist government on Site Alpha led to neurosis, extreme guilt, and mass suicide. Nevertheless, the actual cause of the disappearance of the original colony would forever remain a mystery . . .
